Trump is demonstrating how dependent our political system is on people playing by the rules. Trump is not playing by the rules.
Clearly the court cases were never expected to succeed. What they were expected to do is sow doubt and provide a rationalization for correcting an "injustice."
The first crack was when two Republican election commissioners for Wayne County in Michigan refused to certify the county election results due to what were obviously clerical discrepancies.
Then they changed their minds and certified; then they tried to recant those certification despite acknowledging that the issues weren't nearly great enough to affect the election. This was after Trump made a phone call to at least one of the commissioners.
The second crack was in Mojave County in Arizona when commissioners "delayed" certification to show their solidarity with the commissioners in Michigan.
Now Trump has invited the leaders of the Republican controlled Michigan legislature to speak with him at the White House and they have accepted.
The next big milestone for Michigan is Monday when the state board is supposed to certify the state totals. But that board is also comprised of two Republicans and two Democrats. If they refuse to certify the election results what happens next is a bit unclear.
In the meantime there are concerns in Georgia and Arizona where Republicans control the legislatures and the governor is Republican that they could throw out the election results and assign Trump committed electors. If the legislature in Michigan does the same that would be enough to swing the election to Trump.
Something like this had been speculated about for months but now it's really happening.
