In California a bill is working its way through the legislature which would deny tax exempt status to any youth groups that deny membership to gay, transgender or atheist members.
The bill is clearly aimed at pressuring the Boy Scouts to lift its bans on gays and atheists. The question is whether this is an appropriate action for the government to take?
The scouts are a private organization and as such have the right to establish membership criteria but they are not entitled to tax exemption.
I don't see anything wrong with this bill. It doesn't require the scouts to change membership policies. That would clearly be unconstitutional. What it does is not reward them with a tax exemption while they exclude members of the population that pay taxes.
