Bergen county had a slight dip as well.

I haven't heard back from the dentist. They were supposed to get back to me with a "treatment plan." I can only assume they're waiting on the insurance company. My wife and I got vaccine appointments by logging on to a site at 12:01 AM. Unfortunately we're on the same day in two different places. Her appointment is local but I'm driving about 60 miles. Hopefully they'll actually have a vaccine when we get there.

Inauguration Day

Well, we made it. Joseph Biden and Kamala Harris have been sworn in.

Biden gave a pretty good speech but I'm not all that optimistic that the right is going to stop claiming that the election was stolen.

Trump had a small send off and promised (threatened?) that they'll be back in some form.

Anyway, the air feels so much fresher today.

The Fall of the Republic 1/19/2021

The threatened massive protests over the weekend didn't materialize. There were apparently a couple of folks here and there but not much. A spokesman in Trenton said there were more skateboarders than demonstrators.

What, if anything, will occur tomorrow during the inauguration we will have to wait and see.

Trump is getting a sendoff at Andrews Air Force base after deciding not to attend Biden's inauguration. The report is that he will have a military band playing "Hail to the Chief" one last time. If it soothes his ego, I don't have a problem with it.

Most anyone in Washington of any importance, including Mike Pence and Mitch McConnell, will be skipping the ceremony to attend a pre-inaugural mass with Joe Biden.

Already it seems like breaths of fresh air emanating from DC. Biden has reasonable plans ready to go. Whether Republicans will get on the bandwagon or fight everything tooth and nail we shall see.

I don't expect them to roll over and play dead nor should they.

Actually, I expect progressives, complaining that Biden's plans don't go far enough, to be just as big a headache.

The dentist want's to remove my bridge, pull the teeth and do an implant. That will leave me with only implants on the upper and all my own teeth on the lower. We've been trying to schedule vaccine appointments. What a nightmare. If I get up the energy I'll do a post dedicated to that.

The Fall of the Republic 1/14/2021

The House has impeached Trump for the 2nd time and this time with the aye votes of 10 Republican Congressmen.

It turns out there is some suspicion that a number of GOP House members helped plan the assault on the Capitol building.

There are two lines here. The first is the facilitation of tours on the day before and the second is an accusation of the organizer of "Stop the Steal" that three GOP Congressman helped him plan the rally.

Now planning a rally is not necessarily a crime depending upon exactly what was planned. We'll see as things progress.

In the meantime everyone from banks to the PGA are deserting Trump and Trump Industries.

There are still concerns about possible violent protests this weekend and next week. There are now over 15,000 National Guard in Washington.

The Fall of the Republic 1/11/2021

Mike Pence doesn't want to invoke the 25th Amendment. Betsy DeVos has resigned in protest. Both Loeffler and Perdue have conceded in Georgia and the crazies are organizing more trouble for January 17th and January 20th.

The chief of the Capitol Police and the Senate Sergeant at Arms have both "resigned" in the wake of the shocking security lapse last Wednesday.

Several thousand lawyers and law students have called for Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz to be disbarred. The PGA has cancelled a tournament that was supposed to take place at a Trump golf course and arrests and firings over participation in Wednesday's riot are ongoing.

The House is preparing impeachment papers but will reportedly delay forwarding it to the Senate for qa month of two.

As far as I can tell, Trump supporters still seem to be standing by him. I don't understand what they see in this guy.

Reports say that 1,000 New York National Guard, 500 New Jersey National Guard and 74 New Jersey State Police are to be sent to Washington so I suppose they're expecting trouble and being a bit smarter about it this time around.

The Corona Virus, January 11, 2021

There are currently 22,753,470 reported case in the US and 379,577 deaths.

California has 2,692,542 cases and 30,003 deaths
Texas has 1,967,859 cases and 30,518 deaths
Florida has 1,477,019 cases and 22,921 deaths
New York has 1,136,060 cases and 38,601 deaths
Illinois has 1,029,074 cases and 17,574 deaths

Illinois has become the 5th state to top a million cases and California and Texas have both passed 30,000 deaths. The chaos in Washington, where many of the rioters didn't have masks, will probably give us a spike in cases.

The Fall of the Republic 1/7/2021

Well, the dust has settled and the electoral votes have been counted. Trump is still contesting the election and claiming the evidence is on his side but promises a peaceful transition.

Maybe the man really is delusional and not just narcissistic.

Many people are still calling for Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment and I agree with them but I doubt it's going to happen.

Four people are dead after yesterday's chaos and over fifty have been arrested. One woman was shot by police as she tried to force her way into a close off area and three died from undisclosed "medical emergencies."

What appalled me the most about yesterday was Republican representatives and senators repeating the same debunked nonsense about election fraud and the violation of state laws even after the chaos in the capitol.

Whatever happened to the Republican support for federalism?

When did congressional morons get the right to override state sanctioned election results?

Yes, I know what 3 US Code Chapter 1 § 15 says but it was intended to resolve conflicts between say the legislature and the governor or catch a highly abnormal situation where the state certification is uncertain. Neither of these were the case in 2020.

The Republican representatives and Senators that objected to the votes should be expelled. I know it won't happen but I can dream.

The Fall of the Republic 1/6/2021 III

I read some of Ted Cruz's speech and he's a bigger asshole than I thought he was. We can't keep treating these election fraud claims like they're reasonable. That is just going to further inflame the crazies.

What concerns me is not so much the morons in the street but the many apparent cracks in our system that have been shown to exist and that a demagogue could try and take advantage of.

There are four things we saw in 2020 that shouldn't be possible.

1. Election clerks shouldn't be able to not accept certified election results as we almost saw in Michigan.

2. Legislatures should not be able to override election results as Trump tried to get them to do.

3. One state should not be able to challenge the election results in another state as we saw with the Texas lawsuit.

4. Congress should not be able to reject election results certified by a state as currently allowed by 3 US Code Chapter 1 § 15.

We need to take some action, either by new federal law, by changing current federal law or even constitutional amendment, to insure these things can't happen in the future. We were lucky this time and we need to do some caulking.

Well, actually, I HOPE we'll be lucky this time.

The Fall of the Republic 1/6/2021 II

Both President Bush and President Clinton have issued statements about today's shameful events.

From President George W. Bush:

Laura and I are watching the scenes of mayhem unfolding at the seat of our Nation's government in disbelief and dismay. It is a sickening and heartbreaking sight. This is how election results are disputed in a banana republic – not our democratic republic.

I am appalled by the reckless behavior of some political leaders since the election and by the lack of respect shown today for our institutions, our traditions, and our law enforcement.

The violent assault on the Capitol – and disruption of a Constitutionally-mandated meeting of Congress – was undertaken by people whose passions have been inflamed by falsehoods and false hopes.

Insurrection could do grave damage to our Nation and reputation. In the United States of America, it is the fundamental responsibility of every patriotic citizen to support the rule of law.

To those who are disappointed in the results of the election: Our country is more important than the politics of the moment. Let the officials elected by the people fulfill their duties and represent our voices in peace and safety. May God continue to bless the United States of America.

From President Bill Clinton:

"Today we faced an unprecedented assault on our Capitol, our Constitution, and our country.

The assault was fueled by more than four years of poison politics spreading deliberate misinformation, sowing distrust in our system, and pitting Americans against one another. The match was lit by Donald Trump and his most ardent enablers, including many in Congress, to overturn the results of an election he lost.

The election was free, the count was fair, the result is final.

We must complete the peaceful transfer of power our Constitution mandates. I have always believed that America is made up of good, decent people. I still do. If that's who we really are, we must reject today's violence, turn the page, and move forward together—honoring our Constitution, remaining committed to a government of the people, by the people, and for the people."

I never thought I'd look upon the administration of George W. Bush as the good old days.

In the meantime Congress has apparently reconvened and there is some indication that the objections will be "condensed" whatever the fuck that means. I'd like to "condense" Ted Cruz.

I hope whoever shot that woman in the capitol building doesn't get in trouble for it. That event worries me as I don't understand how or why it happened.

The Fall of the Republic 1/6/2021

Trump supporters have assaulted the capitol building in Washington and disrupted the counting of the electoral college votes.

The count was interrupted by Republicans objecting to the Arizona votes when things went to hell.

In response to a plea to tell his supporters to stand down Trump sent out a tweet in which he repeated his ridiculous claims about the election being stolen and him winning by a landslide. Twitter has taken down the tweet and suspended Trump's account at least temporarily.

Vice President Pence and congress were escorted to a safe area. DC police were shown in hand to hand fighting with demonstrators in the crypt below the capitol. Protestors broke windows and invaded congressional offices.

One woman has been killed. A handful of other protestors have been injured.

There was a report that reporters were assaulted and their equipment destroyed.

The National Association of Manufacturers released a statement supporting a move to remove Trump from office.

"Vice President Pence, who was evacuated from the Capitol, should seriously consider working with the Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment to preserve democracy"

National Guard units and police from Virginia and Maryland have been dispatched to reinforce DC and Metro police.

The police have now secured the capitol building and moved demonstrators away.

Several statements, one from the National Security Advisor and one from the acting Defense Secretary, indicate that Mike Pence is making executive decisions. I don't know if that is meaningful or not.

Congress is expected to reconvene at about 8 PM. Whether the idiots who thought objecting to the electoral votes was a good idea will continue to do so is unknown. My hope is they will take the position that their concerns have been heard by objecting to the Arizona votes and stop the nonsense. But I suspect they'll do no such thing and will continue to object.

I saw a report that the Dems might try to impeach Trump again. I'm not clear what that would accomplish.

Hopefully every one of these assholes caught on video and in photos will be identified, arrested and prosecuted.

The National Association of Manufacturers released a statement supporting a move to remove Trump from office. The Fall of the Republic 1/4/2021 II

So, we finally have a statement of the Trump game plan for January 6th courtesy of the Washington Examiner.

Jenna Ellis, a senior legal adviser to the Trump campaign, told Just the News on Monday that Vice President Mike Pence, who as president of the Senate announces the results of the vote in each state and asks for any objections, could refuse to do so for several battleground states won by Biden but contested by Trump.

Instead, she said, Pence could send a request to legislatures from these six states where claims of voter fraud and irregularities have been levied — Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin — to decide whether to accept the electors for Biden or the self-appointed ones who back Trump.

"Pence should require a timely response from each state legislature and set a deadline of Jan. 17," she said. "If any state legislature fails to provide a timely response, no electoral votes can be opened and counted from that state. The Constitution provides that if no candidate for President receives a majority of electoral votes, the Congress shall vote by state delegation. This would provide two and one-half days for Congress to meet and vote by delegation prior to January 20 at noon for inauguration."

One would hope that the joint session of Congress would go absolutely ape shit if Pence tried this and simply call in Chuck Grassley, the Senate president pro tempore, to announce the votes for him.

Two days to go.

The Corona Virus, January 4, 2021

There are currently 20,969,505 reported case in the US and 356,578 deaths.

The Bergen County numbers are up slightly as well.

Two of my daughters got their stimulus checks on January 1st. My other daughter and myself are not eleigible.

The Fall of the Republic 1/4/2021

The WAPO has published a recording of Trump trying to get Georgia officials to "find" votes for him and claiming that he won Georgia by hundreds of thousands of votes.

If this isn't breaking the law by suborning fraud, it's pretty darn close.

This call tells me two things. The first is that Trump is willing to take extra-legal steps to reverse the election and the second is that he may very well be delusional.

The "counting" of the electoral votes in Congress takes place Wednesday and it looks like we'll have plenty of political theater as Republicans claim that they will challenge votes from multiple states.

The GOP has disgraced itself beyond redemption. All I can hope is that it gets relegated to the dustbin of history and a new, better party replaces it.
