No changes in format this week but it's the end of September and I can't believe I'm still doing this shit.

New Jersey jumped a lot again. Many of these cases appear to be from Ocean County which is reporting over 200 cases a day. This sort of implies we're seeing big time fallout from Labor Day. Really concerning is the jump in positive test percentage.

Bergen County Cases and Percentage Increase
March 30 - April 5 -- 4,018, 185.2%
April 6 - April 12 ---- 3,597, 58.1%

Sep  21 -Sep 27     --- 238,  1.1% Dashboard New Cases = 294

Again the Dashboard New Cases is higher than the subtraction. Either way we have an uptick in Bergen County as well, The only question is by how much? Yes, that is precisely the same thing I said last week so things are not going well.

The school where my daughter teaches shut down for two weeks because two children tested positive. That didn't take long. She's doing virtual and has set up a studio in my garage.

Trump's Supreme Court Pick

As expected Trump has named Amy Coney Barrett to replace RBG on the Supreme Court.

I didn't think he could come up with a worse pick then Kavanaugh but this lady just might qualify.

Barrett is a religious nut job. Her appointment has managed to convince me that packing the court, something I have always opposed, might actually be a good idea.

She believes that simple bread and wine can actually be changed into the body and blood of a man who, if he ever existed, died over two thousand years ago. If it was supposed to be symbolic it wouldn't bother me so much.

But the claim is that the substance actually changes despite the fact that they still LOOK like bread and wine and if you test the wine, it's still wine and if you test the bread, it's still bread.

I read an editorial in the Washington Post claiming that no one can question her intellect. I'm sorry, but yes, I CAN question the intellect of someone who believes something so preposterous.

She also is apparently not a big believer in stare decisis so Roe v. Wade is in great danger as are the hard won rights gained by LGBTQ folks.

It's just another disaster in this year of disasters.

The numbers last week went up slightly. I suppose given the Labor Day weekend and the opening of schools that's to be expected. Let's see what happens going forward. The Big 10 has reversed itself and decided to play a shortened schedule starting at the end of October.

New Jersey jumped as well so perhaps saying last week there was no impact from Labor Day was premature. Again, we shall see what happens as we go forward.

Bergen County Cases and Percentage Increase

Given the way the Giants are playing I'm glad they refunded my season ticket price. Now that Saquon Barkley is probably out for the season it can only get worse.

The Idea of Large Scale Police Brutality

I tend to vote Democrat and I'm going to vote against Trump. I support the separation of church and state, a woman's right to choose, LGBTQ rights and equal opportunity.

I'm also an engineer. I've looked at the numbers and I see no evidence for many of the claims of the left. What I see is anecdotal evidence being extrapolated to extreme conclusions.

Let's consider this idea of large scale police brutality, especially against unarmed blacks. The police are not perfect and expecting them to ever be perfect is a forlorn hope. Of course things can always be improved.

-- There are 687,000 police officers in the United States.

-- They make over 10 million arrests a year.

-- According to WAPO database police killed 999 suspects in 2019. That's one fatal event for every 10,000 arrests.

-- Of those 999 fatal events 404 suspects were white, 250 were black, 161 were Hispanic and the rest were other or unknown race. Blacks comprise 13% of the population so 250, or about 25%, deaths is higher than expected IF one uses population size as a benchmark. But that's the wrong benchmark (Imagine if we used sex. Since 95% of suspects killed are male does it prove that police hate men?). The right benchmark is arrests and blacks account for 38% of arrests so there is no evidence there of any overt racism.

-- Of those 999 fatal events 55 suspects were known to be unarmed. So one unarmed fatal event for about every 182,000 arrests. Of that 55, 25 were white, 14 were black, 11 were Hispanic and 5 were other. So again we have about 25% being black which again, given the arrest rate of 38%, is not at all out of line.

None of this excuses horrendous events such as George Floyd but I see no evidence of a wide spread problem. I'm open to someone showing me why I'm wrong.

So What About the Election?

I have this feeling of deja vu all over again.

The Dems will probably hold the House, the GOP will probably hold the Senate and I have no idea about the presidential race.

Biden leads but Trump seems to be inching closer. Again the trends are not that encouraging.

Given the revelation from the Woodward interview that Trump admitted lying about the possible severity of the Corona Virus he SHOULD be a dead duck but the issues that got him elected in the first place are still there.

Personally both sides strike me as bat shit crazy but for different reasons.

Trump's legions seem quite happy with the idea of ditching democracy and anointing Trump leader despite the fact that he's clearly incompetent.

Trump has implied that if he loses he won't accept the results. He has also implied that he will use the courts to disenfranchise as many mail-in as he feels necessary if he's ahead early. Just the other day he began talking about "negotiating" a third term which the 22nd Amendment sort of prohibits.

I say "sort of prohibits" because it says you can't be ELECTED more than twice. Perhaps not bothering with a messy election is what Trump means by "negotiating." One wonders how the Army would react to that?

On the left, if I hear the phrases "white privilege" or "systemic racism" many more times I'm going to consider moving someplace warm. I just don't know where that would be.

I would still go with Biden and Harris for no other reason than I think they're safer on my big three issues which are (1) the separation of church and state, (2) abortion access and (3) LGBTQ rights.

I'm closer to the Republicans on law and order, skepticism on "systemic racism" and my distaste for the current incantation of feminism.

The numbers continue to come down although there is some concern that the Trump administration and a decrease in testing have something to do with that. I'm not aware of any evidence to that effect though.

New Jersey was again flat last week. It's week after Labor Day and, at least so far, there's no obvious impact. The big jump I noticed last week turned out to be a mistake that was subsequently corrected.

Bergen County Cases and Percentage Increase

Aug 3 -  Aug 9     --     273,  1.3%
Aug 10 - Aug 16  --     401,  1.9%
Aug 17 - Aug 23  --     131,  0.6% Dashboard New Cases = 234

Sep  7 - Sep 13     ---   178,  0.8% Dashboard New Cases = 244

Again the Dashboard New Cases is higher than the subtraction. I would say it's due to previously unassigned cases being assigned except there are days there the Dashboard New Cases is LOWER. I don't know what to make of this.

One daughter is back teaching and the other has started a new job. It's in New Jersey so at least she's no longer going to the city every day. We have informed our gym to freeze our memberships. We're not ready to return. They'll hold the memberships frozen until the end of the year.

New Jersey was flat last week but I just saw a huge number of new cases listed. I'll have to check that. Also indoor dining and theaters opened Friday and gyms are opening tomorrow.

The Dashboard still doesn't match the subtraction but at least it was closer.

Nothing really new on the home front.
